first_imgJob DescriptionThe Director of Student Affairs Communications serves as the chiefcommunications and public relations officer for Student Affairs atVirginia Tech. Reporting directly to the Assistant Vice Presidentfor Administration, with a dotted line to the Associate VicePresident for University Relations, this position also maintains aclose working relationship with the Vice President of StudentAffairs.The director will have a strong record of progressive experience intoday’s communications fields. The director must be able to managemultiple and competing priorities in a dynamic environment.The director will plan, execute, and evaluate a comprehensivecommunications program for Student Affairs, for internal andexternal stakeholders, and align those activities with universitycommunications, marketing and branding initiatives. The directorwill work across many university units and teams to providecritical information to prospective and current students andfamilies.Communications will promote student learning and development bypromoting experiences that lead to student success. The directorserves as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Team, providesleadership to a divisional/central communications team, andleadership and coordination of department level communicationmanagers. This position will work collaboratively the StudentAffairs advancement team to pursue and promote overallinstitutional goals, related fundraising, and alumni and parentengagement.Required Qualifications• Bachelor’s degree with significant experience in communications,journalism, English, student affairs, or a related field.• Experience leading communications for a multilayer organization(e.g., education, health care, non-profit, government agency,etc.)• A broad background in institutional communications or studentaffairs communications.• Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing astrategic vision or communications strategy –including defininggoals and objectives, target audiences and assessment.• Evidence of strong writing, editing, interpersonal, contentstrategy, and marketing skills.• Experience with and understanding of effective digitalcommunications, including website strategy, email, and socialmedia.• Supervision experience.• Ability to manage multiple and competing priorities and takeinitiative in a dynamic, fast paced environment.• Ability to work collaboratively with a team of colleagues andserve as a representative of the division.Preferred Qualifications• Master’s degree in related field.• Experience working in a higher education setting.• Understanding of marketing and communications trends impactingcurrent college students and how these may differ from strategiesto engage prospective students and donors.• Demonstrated experience of developing and implementing astrategic visions, both within the department and more broadly forStudent Affairs.• Evidence of presentation skills, including experience developingprofessional and engaging slideshows with PowerPoint or otherpresentation software.• Experience leading a team of professional communicators.• Understanding of accessibility in communications.SalaryHigh 80’sAppointment TypeRegularReview Date5/17/2021Additional Information Student Affairs at Virginia Techfosters a community where each student creates a customizedexperience to meet their goals.
