The North Face Turned Recyclables From National Parks Into Clothing

first_img Like most folks who wear its clothing or use its outdoor gear, The North Face is a big fan of our national parks. This week, the company announced a new way it’s helping to keep our parks clean and beautiful. The North Face will be donating a portion of the sales from a new clothing line to The National Parks Foundation. Funds contributed by TNF have been earmarked for sustainability projects including water bottle refilling stations and bear-proof recycle bins. That’s not the only way the company is helping out, however. It all started with the raw materials. The new clothes are actually made from plastic bottles that were collected from three of America’s most-loved parks.More than 160,000 pounds of plastic was collected from Grand Tetons, Great Smoky Mountains, and Yosemite National Parks. It’s easy enough to see where all those bottles came from. Those three parks see a total of around 20 million visitors each year. The North Face has Bottle Source shirts for the whole family up for sale — including the excellent “John Muir is My Homeboy” tee that pays homage to the father of the National Park system. You can find them on its website and in U.S. stores. There’s also a limited edition tote that you can use to carry around your park necessities in a sustainable way.Its new Bottle Source range isn’t the only way The North Face supports sustainability efforts. The company also uses recycled polyester insulation in some of its core products like the Denali jacket. The same fill adds warmth to TNF’s Re-source hoodies and its signature packable blanket. The North Face has also started using Climate Beneficial wool. What’s Climate Beneficial wool, you ask? It’s wool sheared from sheep that graze on a carbon farm. The farms utilize “inexpensive organic management practices” to offset the greenhouse gasses produced by the flock. HandsOn Samurai Shodown Revives Classic Blade Battles

first_img When Street Fighter IV first launched a decade ago it kicked off a full-blown renaissance for classic 2D arcade fighting games. Beloved franchises like Marvel vs. Capcom and Killer Instinct returned. Stagnant series that technically never left like Tekken and Mortal Kombat got fresh blood. And new games like Skullgirls and BlazBlue left strong immediate impressions. We even got a great Dragon Ball game from this ongoing golden age.But one franchise that has yet to get its due is classic 2D weapons fighter Samurai Shodown from SNK. That’s about to change with the Samurai Shodown reboot coming later this year, and based on what I played it feels like the wait was worth it.I bring up Street Fighter IV also because that’s the most obvious reference point for the new Samurai Shodown. While it runs on the same Unreal Engine 4 as Street Fighter V, the art style’s heavy emphasis on medieval Japanese brushstrokes looks like a prettier take on Street Fighter IV’s aesthetic. The subtle watercolors and paper-like texture also reminded me of Capcom’s Okami. It’s so beautiful that it made the bloody violence of sword combat more shocking, which is the feeling the best samurai stories invoke.<span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SELRES_start”></span><span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SELRES_start”></span>Although it’s billed as a prequel to the original Samurai Shodown games, which have been on hiatus since basically right before Street Fighter IV’s release, this new game doesn’t have the cinematic story mode you’ve seen in recent fighting games like the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11. But the fighting itself tells its own kinds of stories. While not on the punishingly lethal level of Bushido Blade, Samurai Shodown recognizes that slashing another person with a sword should really do a lot of damage. So instead of elaborate multi-hit punch combos, if you just get a couple of good swings in there your opponent is finished. “Conclusion!”But if anything this opens up strategies instead of limiting them. There are only four attack buttons to worry about, three levels of slash strength and a kick button. Special moves rarely require fancy inputs. You need to focus more on out-thinking your opponent in the neutral game and running with it as soon as you have an advantage. Maintaining momentum is so important that even among equally skilled players one person can just take the whole game without getting hit if they get in the zone. The more unique mechanics are about bolstering the defensive options Samurai Shodown has spent less attention on in the past as well as giving players ways to stage dramatic comebacks and swing momentum in their favors. You can perform your complex super special move at any time but you can only do it once and landing it is tricky as combos can’t help you. You can dodge, perfectly parry projectiles, and even disarm your opponent leaving them with weak fists instead of a blade until they pick up back up. Build up the Rage Gauge to buff your attacks and pull off a different special move with power tied to your own dwindling health.<span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SELRES_start”></span><span data-mce-type=”bookmark” style=”display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;” class=”mce_SELRES_start”></span>The different characters also obviously change up your tactics. I played four characters from the initial 16-character roster, made up of 13 veterans and three newcomers. Haohmaru remains your basic Ryu type, even if Samurai Shodown encourages a fundamentally different playstyle compared to Street Fighter. Charlotte uses graceful fencing attacks while Earthquake overwhelms opponents with his sheer size, strength, and range with his chain. Galford fights with his good dog. And while he only appears in training mode, the referee is here, so hardcore retro SamSho fans can rest easy.Samurai Shodown’s fighting system is rock solid for competitive play. And SNK wants to cater to that community. Along with traditional online battles players can fight against asymmetrical A.I. facsimiles of their friends for better human training. The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of the game launch in June 2019 so folks can practice for the game’s surprising EVO 2019 tournament appearance. And later it’s coming to PC and Nintendo Switch giving even more potential players the chance to sharpen their blades against each other. We can’t wait!
