The province said that operational revenue in the first three months of the fiscal year was $9.9 billion, $211 million higher than expected, due to higher oil prices and investment income. Operational expenses were $9.2 billion, resulting in a $715 million operational surplus for the quarter. However, it’s forecasting that its budget will be close to balanced for the year overall. For the 2013/2014 fiscal year, its forecast ranges from a surplus of $250 million to a deficit of $500 million. So far, $704 million has been allocated to flood recovery, it says. Although the total bill is expected to be much higher than that. “Right now, our best estimates show the June flooding disaster to be about a $5-billion event,” said Doug Horner, president of Treasury Board and the province’s minister of finance While this overall cost will be shared between the province, other levels of government, and insurance claims, Horner said the event will impact the province’s finances. “We’re certainly in for some challenges,” he said. “But with a solid commitment from the federal government for their contribution to support disaster recovery, and thanks to our strong economy and higher revenues in first quarter, we are in a good position to help get lives back to normal.” Related news read more

Sports Exhibition for Independence

first_imgRelatedSports Exhibition for Independence RelatedSports Exhibition for Independence RelatedSports Exhibition for Independence By Andrine Davidson, JIS Reporter Sports Exhibition for Independence CultureJuly 9, 2012 Advertisements FacebookTwitterWhatsAppEmail Plans are underway for a National Sports Exhibition, which is expected to be open to the public during the Independence celebrations.  The display, which is to be housed on the second floor of the National Arena, is intended to be a tribute to the performance of Jamaican sportsmen and women in various fields from the mid-19th Century to today. Minister with responsibility for Sports, Hon. Natalie Neita-Headley, said the exhibition will form the basis of what will become the National Sport Museum and Hall of Fame, construction of which will be undertaken by the government of Jamaica. “We believe that we have accomplished so much over so many years and we decided that we would go no further than this year in establishing the museum,” she told JIS News at a meeting of the National Sport Museum Committee (NSMC) on Tuesday (July 3) at Jamaica House. She said that the exhibit “would seek to archive and showcase the sporting journey of our nation.” The Minister pointed out that many nations, that have achieved far less than Jamaica has over the years, have built sport museums and the country has many accomplishments of which the nation should be proud. “We have been medalling gold for such a long time. We were around for the 1948 Games and we are going back to London. In 2012, we expect to do well,” the Minister said. She said it is important that children get accurate information about the performance of Jamaicans in the various sporting activities and their contribution to the development of sport in Jamaica. Work on the exhibition is currently being undertaken by the NSMC, which is comprised of representatives of a number of government and private sector organisations, including the Institute of Jamaica, Jamaica Olympic Association, Public Broadcasting Corporation of Jamaica (PBCJ) and the Jamaica Information Service (JIS). The membership of the committee also comprises sports administrators, businessmen, archivists, and curators.last_img read more

Security: Businesses Invest in Security Protection Products

first_imgSpecialized Threat Analysis and Protection (STAP) is a term used by research firm IDC to designate security threats made by malware against financial and intellectual property theft.  The STAP market is growing at a compound annual rate of 42.2 percent through the year 2017.  By 2017, the market should reach $1.17 billion.Ruggero Contu, Research Director at Gartner, commented that “consistent increase in the complexity and volume of targeted attacks, coupled with compliance-related issues continue to support security market growth.”Andy Steingruebl, Director at PayPal mobile security, said that “Big data and advanced targeted attacks would be the main forces shaping the security technology market. Advanced attackers are now capable of spying inside an organisation once they successfully breach security controls.”The IDC study found that there was a great variety of approaches taken by vendors in the design of STAP products.  The study notes that these products can be applied in a layered fashion and, because of that, can be used in a complementary way.  For example, protections may be applied at endpoints and again at the network level.  Some of the detection techniques used by these products include sandboxing, emulation, big data analytics and containerization.  Ultimately many STAP functions are expected to be incorporated into traditional security products.John Grady, research manager with IDC’s Security Products group, said that “organizations have quickly begun to realize that they need improved protection against targeted attacks.  IDC has seen these solutions become a strategic necessity for many organizations, especially in the financial services and government sectors, with budget being quickly allocated to prioritize deployment.”A Ponemon study found that only about 31 percent of businesses currently are insured against data breaches, but that number continues to grow.  Companies now rank the possibility of the risk of cyber attack as a risk more likely to occur than natural disasters or other business risks.last_img read more

Sergio Aguero collapses at halftime as Argentina lose to Nigeria in friendly

first_imgArgentina striker Sergio Aguero collapsed in the dressing room at halftime before they lost 4-2 to fellow World Cup qualifiers Nigeria after taking a two-goal lead in a friendly in Krasnodar, Russia on Tuesday. The Argentine Football Association (AFA) said in a statement that Aguero, who scored in the first half, was taken away for routine examinations but added: “The player is well”.His Premier League club Manchester City said the 29-year-old Aguero had been cleared by doctors to return to England as planned after he suffered what they called “a dizzy spell”.”Sergio never lost consciousness, and was taken to hospital for precautionary medical checks,” City said on their official website (www.mancity.com).Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli rested Lionel Messi following the 1-0 win over next year’s World Cup hosts Russia on Saturday and it seemed that they could cope without him.Ever Banega curled in a free kick, awarded after Nigeria goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi picked the ball up outside his area, in the 28th minute and Aguero finished off a sweeping counter-attack eight minutes later. But Kelechi Iheanacho inspired Nigeria’s fightback.First, he emulated Banega by scoring from a free kick on the stroke of halftime and then set up the equaliser by pulling the ball back for Alex Iwobi to net seven minutes after the re-start.The Super Eagles took the lead two minutes after that when Brian Idowu sidefooted home from the edge of the area to finish off a counter attack.A superb goal by Iwobi completed the comeback in the 73rd minute as he collected the ball, slipped it between Javier Mascherano’s legs and fired past Agustin Marchesin.advertisementArgentina staggered through their World Cup qualifying campaign, only clinching their place at the finals with a 3-1 win in Ecuador in their final match.”It’s a difficult game to explain,” said Sampaoli. “We could have been 3-0 or 4-0 ahead in the first half and we went in with a 2-1 lead.”My biggest worry was the way the team played when we were behind. I know we are capable and have the individual talent to be able to get out of these situations and I’m worried about what happened tonight.”We played an incredible first half but we lost our way in a match which could confuse a lot of people.”Aguero will be assessed by Manchester City’s medical team ahead of this weekend’s Premier League trip to Leicester City.last_img read more
