Highly influential Indian musician/guru/politician/pundit Ravi Shankar has died in a US hospital at age 92. His music transcended all cultural barriers. He is survived by his daughter Norah Jones. The BBC reports that he had been admitted to the Sripps Memorial Hospital in San Diego last week, yet failed to fully recover from surgery. The Shankar family released the following statement via ravishankar.org:“It is with heavy hearts we write to inform you that Pandit Ravi Shankar, husband, father, and musical soul, passed away today, December 11th, 2012.As you all know, his health has been fragile for the past several years and on Thursday he underwent a surgery that could have potentially given him a new lease of life. Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the surgeons and doctors taking care of him, his body was not able to withstand the strain of the surgery. We were at his side when he passed away.We know that you all feel our loss with us, and we thank you for all of your prayers and good wishes through this difficult time. Although it is a time for sorrow and sadness, it is also a time for all of us to give thanks and to be grateful that we were able to have him as a part of our lives. His spirit and his legacy will live on forever in our hearts and in his music.”Ravi Shankar is often regarded as the most igained international fame in the mid 1960′s when George Harrison of The Beatles traveled to India for six weeks to study under his tutelage. His music influenced many rock bands of the time including The Byrds and The Beatles. Beatles Ringo Starr released a statement stating, “Ravi was a great loss musically, spiritually and physically. God bless to Ravi’s family. Peace & Love,”. While known for his music, Ravi was often thought of as a guru or pundit first. He later went on to play the famous Monteray Pop Festival, Woodstock Music Festival, to generate proceeds for the flood of refugees pouring into India, as well as The Concert for Bangladesh. He has won three Grammys and was also nominated for a Academy Award for Best Original Music Score for his work on the film Ghandi.Later, from 1986 to 1992, Shankar put his politics into practice as a member of India’s upper house of parliament, the Rajya Sabha, or state assembly, serving with India’s current Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.“It was difficult, often, to judge what was more remarkable — the man or his music,” Singh said of Shankar.Ravi Shankar on death, “We are afraid of death, because we don’t know what it is. Fear comes from the unknown, something which we don’t know. It’s nothing. You’ll find the body has dropped, but nothing has happened to you. You are intact; you take another body.” And, Death is very complementary to living. It’s nothing opposed to life. It’s a complement to life; it makes life new and fresh.”George Harrison and Ravi ShankarBangla Dun – Live in NYC

According to a Tokyo-area newspaper, former Beatle Paul McCartney has been hospitalized with a viral infection in Tokyo, Japan. McCartney cancelled a handful of tour dates in Japan and South Korea due to illness, and further reports suggest that the illness has led to his hospitalization. The 71-year-old musician did schedule an extensive U.S. tour starting in June, so hopefully McCartney will be healthy enough to play those dates. You can see his full U.S. tour schedule on the official Paul McCartney website. If you have the opportunity to see McCartney perform, do it. The man is a living legend.Wishing you a speedy recovery Sir Paul!!
Johnny Depp has been making special guest appearances all over the place in 2014. The actor/musician has played with Paul McCartney, Ryan Adams, Aerosmith, and even filled in for Elvis Costello when the musician had to miss a recording session for the New Basement Tapes (recordings of Bob Dylan penned songs that features Costello, Jim James, Marcus Mumford, and more).Well, chalk another one up for Depp, as he came out to play guitar with Marilyn Manson during a “Beautiful People” encore at the shock rocker’s show at The Roxy on Halloween in Los Angeles. The two have been friends since the late 90’s and Depp even performed with Manson at the 2012 Revolver Golden Gods Award Show. Manson also brought out Die Antwoord‘s Ninja to do some nonsensical yelling and jumping around. Also, Manson really likes Depp’s man-parts (join the club), as he can’t get enough of grabbing Depp’s ass and his frontal section. Hey, its rock n’ roll, right? Anything goes.[via Rolling Stone]
French hip-hop producer Wax Tailor has performed his unique live show all around the world, leaving showgoers in a state of perpetual awe and delight. Those unfamiliar with his work will find it difficult to pigeonhole his sound but will undoubtedly find themselves quick to pick up everything in his eclectic catalog.Tailor recently wrapped up a sold out tour across the US to promote his latest double-album release, Phonovisions Symphonic Orchestra, a stunning arrangement of live music from the past year. L4LM had a few questions for the artist to find out his thoughts on the success of the tour and how the new album was no easy task but worth all the effort. How would you describe your style of music to those who may not be familiar with Wax Tailor?I’m not so good to put a stamp on it. The backbone of my musical culture is really the golden years’ boom bap, but I grew up listening to many genres like jazz, 60′ pop, etc. At a moment, I simply decided to do a sound that really looked like a combination of all those influences. The shortest description would probably be Orchestra Hip Hop.You’ve been making music for ten years now. How do you feel your sound has evolved in that time? It’s a long and slow process. I think on each new album I try new things. My second album was a lot about introducing some vocal composition, on my third, I injected a lot of string arrangements, and my last studio album was a conceptual one. It’s all about renewing myself with keeping the vibe.Do you feel the instrumental hip-hop scene has grown in popularity since you got involved in the scene?Definitely. I see a lot of new developing producers arriving. Ten years ago when I released my first one, it was really different. How do you feel about the outcome of your sold out US tour? Were you surprised by its success? That was really cool for me. It meant a lot to let people in the US discover this crazy project, and I wanted to share it for the release week. It’s now nearly ten years since my first time in the US opening for my friend RJD2, and I feel like I got a strong relation with the crowd in the US. So, yes, it was important to be there and seeing it sold out every night was the icing on the cake. I look forward to touring again with my band.Which city was your favorite? How you want me to answer this? Do you believe if I had one that I’ll tell you? Come on!! (Wink.) What I can tell is that I’m always surprised about the crowd reaction in the US. There’s no filter, and I love it.What was the greatest obstacle in putting together the Phonovisions Symphonic Orchestra album and DVD with a 35-piece orchestra and 17-person choir? There are so many layers on this kind of project. It’s a struggle. You fight to make it happen. You need to convince everybody. You fight to find the budget for seventy-eight people on the road. You fight on all levels, but the reward is really fantastic, and you forget about everything else. You regularly collaborate with European hip-hop/funk band A.S.M, which has resulted in some of your more recognizable tracks like “Say Yes” and “Positively Inclined.” Are you working on any new material with them? Not for now. You know, I never work this way. I mean, instrumentals come first. It’s like a scenario: you write first and then you define your characters. I’m about to go back in the studio for the next chapter so we’ll see.Are there any artists/bands you would like to collaborate with in the future? For the same reason, it’s not easy to answer. If we just talk about dreams, sure. I’d love to work with artists like Nas, Q-Tip, Common in rap music. I’d love to invite singers like Damon Albarn, Thom Yorke, and as we just talk about dreams, why not Stevie Wonder? But I forgot his cell phone number. (Wink.)What are your plans in 2015?Mainly studio with a few road escapes. I’ll probably go back to Brasil in a few months and got a few projects that could include a few towns in the US where I’ve never played, but the main thing will be working in studio. Is there anything else you would like to add or promote?Phonovisions Symphonic Orchestra!!! I’m really proud about this project, probably also because that’s the perfect link between all I’ve done and a personal project that became a collective experience, and music is a lot about sharing. I’ve worked hard on the collector editions, so you should check for it in Digibook, 2CD/DVD, or 4LP vinyl box.
it’s been 4 years to the day since the last show. so, if “post lcd” was college, we’d be graduating from “post lcd”…Posted by LCD Soundsystem on Thursday, April 2, 2015 It’s been four years since James Murphy and LCD Soundsystem put on one of the grandest going away parties at Madison Square Garden, which featured appearances from Arcade Fire and Reggie Watts. While he doesn’t speak very much about the group, instead choosing to look ahead at future endeavors, Murphy decided to make a post via LCD’s Facebook page about the four years that have passed since the group’s final show and what he and each member of the band has accomplished since then. Here is what he said: Who knows if Murphy will ever decide to bring the group back. In the meantime, let’s lament a bit while we watch video from the MSG show, shall we?
Ms. Lauryn Hill has made it clear that she does not want to play sides in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Hill was scheduled to perform in Tel Aviv, Israel on May 7th, but was also aiming to perform in Ramallah, a city in the Palestinian Territory. However, complications prevented her from booking the latter, and, rather than perform in Israel only, Hill is cancelling both shows entirely. You can read the statement posted on her Facebook page:Dear Friends and Fans in Israel,When deciding to play the region, my intention was to perform in both Tel Aviv and Ramallah. Setting up a performance in the Palestinian Territory, at the same time as our show in Israel, proved to be a challenge. I’ve wanted very much to bring our live performance to this part of the world, but also to be a presence supporting justice and peace. It is very important to me that my presence or message not be misconstrued, or a source of alienation to either my Israeli or my Palestinian fans. For this reason, we have decided to cancel the upcoming performance in Israel, and seek a different strategy to bring my music to ALL of my fans in the region. May healing, equanimity, and the openness necessary for lasting resolution and reconciliation come to this region and its people.Respectfully,Ms. Lauryn Hill
