Busy week ahead for golf tourneys

first_imgRight in the middle of football season, two big Utah golf tournaments will be played Monday and Tuesday at golf courses just a few miles apart. The annual Sorenson Champions Challenge begins with a pro-am Monday and a two-man scramble on Tuesday at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club in Lehi, while the annual Utah-Arizona Shootout will be played at Alpine Country Club in Highland. The Shootout rotates between Utah and Arizona each year and is usually played the second week of October. However, the Champions Challenge, which is in its 12th year, is usually played in June but was postponed a few months for economic reasons.Fortunately for both tournaments, the weather forecast is for temperatures in the mid-60s Monday and Tuesday, as good as you could expect for early October. The Champions Challenge is Johnny Miller’s brainchild and brings top players from the Champions and PGA tours to Utah each year.Because of the timing, the field isn’t as strong as in recent years, but it will feature newcomers Rocco Mediate and LPGA player/model Anna Rawson as well as old favorites such as Mike Weir, Hale Irwin and Craig Stadler. Also playing are Utah Jazz players Deron Williams and Kyle Korver, who will compete in Monday’s pro-am as well as Tuesday’s two-man scramble with local pros Boyd Summerhays and Steele DeWald, although not for the prize money. After 18 years of competition the Utah-Arizona Shootout is tied at 9-9.Utah has a veteran team with just two rookies in Stuart and senior Rob Bachman. Others playing are senior Mike Hacker, Annette Gaiotti, Echo Thatcher, Kirk Siddens, Herb Lyons, Darrin Overson, Jeff Jolley, Tyson Lund, Dan Horner and Andrew Barton. The 12-person teams will play a Ryder Cup-style format with Four-Ball and Alternate-shot competitions on Monday and singles matches on Tuesday. The Arizona team will be led by Michael Wog and Cyrus Whitney, who have played in previous Shootouts. The Arizona women will be 21-year-old Ashley Smith and 24-year-old Marissa Muir. Both are former collegians with Smith playing at Arizona State and Muir playing at Kentucky. For the Champions Challenge, tickets can be purchased at Thanksgiving Point, championschallenge golf.com or at the gate on Monday and Tuesday. There is no charge for the Utah-Arizona matches.e-mail: [email protected]last_img
