It will play Mulvane on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Wildcats beat Winfield earlier in the evening 60-47.Sparked by a Cade Phelps barrage in which he knocked down three consecutive 3-pointers in the third quarter, Wellington opened up a double digit lead and never looked back.“He was feeling it,” said Rick Roitman, Wellington head boys basketball coach. “What impressed me even more is after that moment, we never allowed Rose Hill back in it. We’ve lost 12 games this year and nine of those losses we had leads, sometimes double digit leads.”The Crusaders would outscore Rose Hill 22-14 in the third quarter and 17-12 in the fourth to pick up the 15-point win. That made the first half a distant memory in which Wellington clutched to a 20-18 lead in which neither team was playing well.“We came out tight, and I attribute that to first round jitters,” Roitman said. “I told the boys this is a one-game season. We lose and it is next season. We win we play another one.”After intermission, Wellington set the tone in the second half by scoring on its first three possessions and building a 27-21 lead. Then Phelps ripped off three treys in the row and suddenly the Dukes were up 36-21.Rose Hill was done.As the game progressed the Rose Hill defense spread the floor. Wellington would then feed the ball inside to Ian King. By the end of the game, Wellington was up as many as 20 points and had the luxury of playing the reserves in the final two minutes.Phelps finished the game with 18 points, 14 of those in the second half. King had 17 and A.J. Snipes 14.The Crusaders need to continue the momentum against Mulvane in the fourth meeting of the season. Mulvane won two of three in the regular season. But the Crusaders won the last one.“Yes, we’d like to even the score with Mulvane,” Roitman said. “This game will be more important than all the other three put together. This is a season defining game we are about to play.”Wellington 59, Rose Hill 44 59 — Rose Hill 22 13 7 Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password!
