Austin junior guard/forward Thomas Walkup has been named the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. Honorable mention this week goes to Central Arkansas freshman guard Jordan Howard, Sam Houston State senior guard Kaheem Ransom and Northwestern State sophomore guard Zeek Woodley. Each school’s sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.center_img Walkup sparked the Stephen F. Austin offense with a career-high 34 points in SFA’s 95-59 win over Houston Baptist. The junior from Pasadena, Texas (Deer Park H.S.), shot 86.7 percent (13 of 15) from the field and made 8 of 10 shots from the free throw line. Walkup also pulled down seven rebounds, dished out five assists and tied a career-high with three steals. Walkup and the Lumberjacks improved to 9-0 in conference and 19-3 overall, having won their last 18 games and 31 straight conference games, dating back to Feb. 16, 2013.last_img
