Kanjilal | Published: January 24 2016 1:00 am Cawdor Castle in Scotland has drawn many a Macbeth fan Top News Perhaps the most entertaining of diplomat and writer Navtej Sarna’s travel stories traces his return to Cairo after the mandatory sojourn to Giza in search of the Ali Baba cafe in Tahrir Square The anecdote dates from before Arab Spring before the square became a shrine to the spirit of revolution At the time international pilgrims sought it to venerate older gods like Naguib Mahfouz who was a regular at the improbably named Ali Baba Unfortunately Sarna found the place boarded up and about to be transformed into a fast food place Devastated to learn that the shishas and backgammon tables would give way to the global pandemic of extra cheese and fries on the side he allowed himself to be led away to another old cafe which his guide claimed Mahfouz also visited sometimes Literary pilgrims he reasoned must make realistic compromises Second Thoughts (HarperCollins) a collection of Sarna’s newspaper columns traces many such pilgrimages Many of them do not work out like a mad dash out of Moscow to Leo Tolstoy’s estate thwarted by an impassive Soviet official with some 90-minute eggs boiling in a dish by his side That archetype had stood like a wall at least from Stalin’s time preventing visitors to Moscow from wandering into the districts and confronting the less edifying aspects of communism But the romance of literary travel lies in the itinerary in the mind not the certainty of arrival Incredible India seems to be oblivious to this flourishing segment of the tourist trade though Indians overseas number among the most enthusiastic literary pilgrims particularly in the UK Stratford-on-Avon positively teems with them and those of us who had Macbeth dinned into us in school tend to steal away from trips to Inverness to brood upon the battlements of Cawdor Castle though the doomed thane never actually trod them TS Eliot fans drive to the unreal solitude of Glencoe on account of a single poem Arthurian types go to Tintagel which is really really out of the way And within London travellers jaded with Theatreland (if such a thing is possible) go in search of the district of Fitzrovia which is nearby but invisible on the map of the city Fitzrovia exists only in the literary imagination The continent too teems with literary trails Admittedly Indian visitors prefer to descend on Interlaken — it seems to be hardwired like the instincts of migratory waterfowl But there are huge numbers who instead veer off to places like the Montparnasse cemetery in Paris where almost the entire creative and intellectual leadership of French culture lie buried The most famous attraction is the grave shared by Jean Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir which are usually found littered with personal notes bouquets trinkets bottles of wine and vials of tears The most extraordinary note I have seen was addressed to De Beauvoir and translated into something like: “And so after everything you’ve been through you’re still sleeping with the old bastard” Unfortunately there isn’t much excitement about literary trails in Incredible India The only metro which draws attention to literary landmarks like many English and European cities is Kolkata The municipality has marked the homes of the city’s departed poets writers and playwrights with baleful yellow signs People do stop to gawk at the buildings which are mostly in a picturesque state of disrepair for Bengali literature did not pay the bills in the 20th century Sarna’s chapters set in India do not generally describe a literary landscape excepting a couple set in the hills — one about Ruskin Bond Stephen Alter etc and the other about the discovery of a set of the Illustrated Classics in childhood And his rumination on Mumbai written shortly after reading Vikram Chandra’s Sacred Games contrasts his own memories of the city with the grittiness of the book Shortly before his death Arun Kolatkar drew a poetic map of the southern reach of the city from Nariman Point to Kala Ghoda where he was a regular at the iconic Wayside Inn which was boarded up like Cairo’s Ali Baba He was preceded by an illustrious list of patrons hatching stratagems of all sorts BR Ambedkar used to pore over certain papers at a table and lore has it that they became constituents of the Constitution And it is said that Russi Karanjia and friends met over the dhansak to conjure up Blitz India’s literary pilgrimages await cataloguing And since English contributes only a tiny fraction of the nation’s literary culture the signposts must first be translated It will require the cooperation of hundreds of contributors in a process which cannot be centrally controlled But someone who can tease out all the stories out there would make India considerably more incredible For all the latest Lifestyle News download Indian Express App More Top NewsBy: IANS | Sydney | Published: August 14 2016 beach your skin comes in contact with a minute fraction of radiation from outside our galaxy say researchers But radiation from outside the galaxy constitutes only ten trillionths of your suntan so there is no immediate need for alarm the astronomers said In a new study published in the Astrophysical Journal the astronomers accurately measured the light hitting the Earth from outside our galaxy over a very broad wavelength range The research looked at photons whose wavelengths vary from a fraction of a micron (damaging) to millimetres (harmless) We are constantly bombarded by about 10 billion photons per second from intergalactic space when we are outside day and night said lead researcher Professor Simon Driver from the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) based at the University of Western Australia “Most of the photons of light hitting us originate from the Sun whether directly scattered by the sky or reflected off dust in the Solar System” he said “However we’re also bathed in radiation from beyond our galaxy called the extra-galactic background light” he pointed out The researchers measured this ambient radiation from the universe from a wide range of wavelengths by combining deep images from a flotilla of space telescopes While 10 billion photons a second might sound like a lot Driver said we would have to bask in it for trillions of Facebook and instant messaging application WhatsApp were today directed by the Supreme Court to furnish details of complaints they have received in India about the uploading of objectionable contents on child pornography rape and gangrape The apex court asked them to provide such details they received last year and this year till August 31 and also about the action taken by them on such complaints A bench comprising Justices Madan B Lokur and U U Lalit directed the Ministry of Home Affiars (MHA) to apprise it about the number of prosecution under the provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO) 2012 during this period “We would like the participating companies Google Google India Yahoo Microsoft Facebook and WhatsApp to place affidavits regarding number of complaints they have received from India about the objectionable contents concerning child pornography rape and gangrape for the year and till August 31 and the action that has been taken on it” the bench said The court was hearing a letter sent to then Chief Justice of India H L Dattu by Hyderabad-based NGO Prajwala along with two rape videos in a pen drive The top court had on its own taken cognisance of the letter about posting of these videos on WhatsApp and asked CBI to launch a probe to apprehend the culprits During the hearing today the bench was informed by the committee comprising representatives from the Centre and the internet majors which was constituted to explore technical solutions to block videos of sexual offences on social sites that these companies had some objection to its report being placed in the public domain Chairperson of the committee told the court that these participating companies have raised some objections after which the lawyers representing the internet firms said they should be given the copy of the panel’s report which has been filed in the court in a sealed cover He said there were several aspects on which no consensus was arrived at during the deliberations by the committee Senior advocate Kapil Sibal appearing for one of the companies said they would come to know about the contents of the committee’s report only when they were provided with its copy Sibal also argued that they wanted to know what were the recommendations which the committee wanted to place in public domain To this the apex court directed that the proposals and recommendations contained in the report be supplied to the lawyers representing the participating companies The bench directed that the proposals and recommendations be supplied to the lawyers in a sealed cover within three days and posted the matter for hearing on September 18 The court also asked the MHA to file its affidavit in two weeks The counsel for the petitioner alleged that this matter was getting delayed and the problem was the manner in which these companies were responding On the issue of confidentiality of the report the lawyer said if the court feels proceedings could be held in-camera The apex court had earlier observed that the committee would hold discussions and meetings to arrive at a consensus on the possibility of ensuring that such objectionable videos pertaining to child pornography gang rape and rape were not made available on the internet Earlier cyber security officials who function under the CBI had told the bench that internet was a “wild highway” and blocking objectionable content at the source was a technical challenge for which clear guidelines needed to be issued to stop circulation of such material The Centre had informed the court that it would set up a specialised agency to block and curb the sharing of sexual offence videos on social networking platforms The NGO’s letter had also mooted the idea of maintaining a national sex offenders’ register which should contain details of persons convicted for offences like eve-teasing stalking molestation and other sexual assaults The NGO had also suggested that MHA should have a tie-up with YouTube and WhatsApp to ensure that such offensive videos are not uploaded and the culprits punished For all the latest Technology News download Indian Express App More
